Flea market - How much is that car in the driveway
Saturday October 2 - Flea market - How much is that car in the driveway?
Saturday morning was a family obligation event. I wanted to work on the house but since Michael had been roped into attending a soccer game, cheerleading practice and a football game as well as playing bridge with my mom's bridge club and going bowling with my dad, I thought going to a Pee wee football game was the least I could do.
My brothers son Kennedy was having his Pee Wee Touch Football game at the Birdville Sports Stadium. This facility is a professional size stadium and used for High School Football. I'm told it cost 56 Million dollars to build and the city is very proud of it. Football is god here. Academics are far down the list of priorities. So we paid our 10 dollars and watched my 6 year old nephew sit on the sidelines waiting his turn to play. I did get to see my brother and his wife Shelly. It was an interesting anthropological observation to watch all the Daddies living their youth again vicariously through their sons. It was also interesting how aggressive the mothers were with the coaches if they felt their sons were not playing enough. It was all so deadly serious. The kids were only 6 years old for goodness sakes. They were supposed to be having fun and not be pro football players. I've noticed very quickly kids are not allowed time to be kids. They are too busy being shipped from one sport, to the next "in" activity be it art, theater, soccer, lacrosse, tennis lessons, swimming class, dance class, play date, baseball, basketball, violin lessons, guitar lessons, voice and singing class or therapy. They have no time to just play. If they do it's inside with a playstation. There is no place to "play" outdoors that is not some kind of organized activity. The results are the kids are fat, bored and expect others to entertain them. They are pressured to achieve in activities they have no interest in.
After the game Tommy took us in his pickup to pick up a used fridge from my sister Sandy. We took that back to the house installed and then went back to go buy the Ceramic cooktop/ Oven Stove we had seen on Friday. We asked the salesman for the one we saw. All they had was the floor model and it had some minor scratches on the side. It was reduced from $499 to $299 this was much less than what we'd seen elsewhere. I noticed that a small plastic piece on the unit was missing. I asked him if we could get a better price because of it. He went to ask and came back and told us that if we take it "as is" we could have it with full warranty for $199. We took it. Packed into the back of Tommy's Pickup and went home with it.
We went back to my parents house where Cathy had been trying to reach us frantically.
She was yard sale shopping in her Ritzy neighborhood. This very wealthy upscale area only allows garage sales on two days a year. Luckily for us one of those days was Saturday. She had negotiated a deal to get us a car she found at Garage sale. If we'd hurry and bring cash we could buy a car for $700 cash. We rushed to get there and test drive it. It was a 1993 Subaru Station wagon (combi). The price was right. The car looked fine. It was fine for what we needed. It has a little problem with the reverse gear. But other wise it was fine. So we bought it and drove it home. Well Dad drove it home because I did not have my License yet.
